Edgar Heap of Birds (Cheyenne name: Hock E Aye Vi) is a Southern Cheyenne multidisciplinary artist working across public art, painting, printmaking, and monumental sculpture. Born in Wichita, Kansas in 1954, his practice is rooted in Indigenous experience and uses text-based conceptual works — often resembling public signage — to challenge dominant historical narratives.

Notable works include Building Minnesota (1990), a landmark installation commissioned by the Walker Art Center, and Wheel, a fifty-foot porcelain enamel sculpture at the Denver Art Museum. He has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2025. He teaches Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma.
