The Fabric of A Nation

May 22-June 25, 2026
deadline to apply: March 23, 2026

ARTS 14C invites applications for The Fabric of a Nation, a Special Project residency for textile, fashion, and fiber artists running from May 22 through a public exhibition opening June 25, 2026, in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the United States. Selected artists will create new work using Art Pantry 14C’s extensive collection of donated red, white, and blue fabrics, sourced from a Netflix film production and spanning a wide range of textures, weights, and material types.

Artists must incorporate these materials into their projects and respond, in any tone or register, to the U.S. Semiquincentennial. Projects may be patriotic, critical, political, hopeful, ironic, conflicted, or otherwise exploratory. There is no expectation of celebration, nor any requirement that projects take a critical stance.

ARTS 14C invites artists to approach this moment with complexity, imagination, and a willingness to rethink what has been inherited.

The residency is open to artists working in textile and fiber art, fashion and garment-based practices, soft sculpture, and experimental or hybrid approaches rooted in fiber.

Back to the Studio

June 19-July 31, 2026
deadline to apply: May 11, 2026

Back to the Studio is a Special Project residency for artists who teach – being a committed, generous educator often requires sacrificing time, energy, and focus that might otherwise be devoted to one’s own artistic practice. Scheduled for the summer, after the academic year has ended, the residency is designed as a temporary return to the studio – a pause from classrooms and institutional demands in order to re-center artistic work.

The residency is project-based and open to artists of all disciplines. Selected artists receive 24/7 access to ARTS 14C’s studio space (work-only or live/work), curatorial support, and dedicated time to complete a proposed project. Work developed during the residency will be presented in October 2026 as part of the 37th Jersey City Art & Studio Tour (JCAST), with ARTS 14C providing exhibition and/or performance space to support public engagement.

Special Project Residency

August 1 – October 4, 2026
deadline to apply: May 18, 2026

The Special Project Residency is a focused, short-term residency for artists of all disciplines proposing a specific project to be developed and completed within the residency period. Designed for artists with a clearly defined idea, the residency supports intensive work and encourages ambitious use of ARTS 14C’s large studio spaces, particularly for projects that benefit from scale, sustained access to space, experimentation, or production.

Running from August 1 through October 4, 2026, the residency culminates in a public presentation during the final weekend of the 37th Jersey City Art & Studio Tour (JCAST). Selected artists receive 24/7 access to studio space, curatorial support from ARTS 14C, and the opportunity to bring a project to completion in front of a significant public audience. Proposals should clearly articulate both the project to be realized and how access to ARTS 14C’s facilities is integral to its development.
